The Mt. Lebanon School District is a nationally recognized and award-winning school district. The district operates seven elementary schools (grades k-5), two middle schools (grades 6-8) and a high school (grades 9-12). The combination of a highly trained staff with educated and committed families results in students who achieve local, state and national honors in instructional, athletic and arts forums Mt. Lebanon* is a residential suburban community of 34,000 people located six miles south of the city of Pittsburgh and covering about six square miles.
The residents are primarily professionals and business leaders, often in management-level positions. The community has a strong commitment to education and is actively involved in an educational partnership with the school district. There are 13 National Merit Semifinalists from the high school. This is the highest number in Western Pennsylvania and 5th highest in the state. The average SAT score at the high school is 1131, which ranks Mt. Lebanon High School the highest in Western Pennsylvania and 6th highest in the state. Each year nearly 1.2 million eleventh graders take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Of these only 15,000 students nationwide or approximately the top half of one percent will become National Merit semifinalists.
This distinctions one of the highest academic honors that can be earned by a student and will be widely publicized in the media across the country. The Mt. Lebanon Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble have been selected from over 130 auditioned ensembles to perform at the PA Music Educators Association's annual state conference in April in Philadelphia. Only Pennsylvania's best are invited to perform in this venue. The high school's Lebanon Log received a Second Place rating in the PA School Press Association's annual evaluation of yearbooks for the 2000-2001 school year. The Devil's Advocate has been awarded a First Place rating in the PA School Press Association's annual evaluation for the 2000-2001 school year.
